disenchantment is really that good
the rumours are true... adult animation has never looked this good
I love disenchantment, no matter how many unanswered questions I may have or how many plot holes there are.
It might be one of the only fictional worlds I’d love to live in. There’s a perfect amount of danger, intrigue, suspense and fun. Also, I find myself wholly willing and trusting these characters to lead the way no matter what.
I have fun watching every tiny side plot, laughing at every detail and relish spending time with them. Too many shows feel manufactured to hit specific beats, provide context at the right time, and round off plot holes that make for a predictable storyline and forgettable characters.
Disenchantment makes me root for Bunty for Sorcerio, even though they don’t significantly impact the storyline.
As we discover the secrets of Dreamland hand in hand with our main characters, I am glad we take a break sometimes to hang out at Luci’s bar or go to sex dungeons and do drugs with Trogs. It’s realistic in the way that I would imagine a previously selfish, hedonistic tomboy princess to act precisely like Bean does.
Despite varying stakes, she will always choose to rebel against her mother, care deeply for her friends and fall in love with mermaids. Seeing the world from her rogue eyes makes me feel like Dreamland is a paradise for the wanton. That adventure is out there, and thrill is aplenty, but you can submit to realism and spend your days in ignorance by drinking, kissing and living your best teenage dream.
She is a perfect example of an imperfect main character. She chooses to do the right things as readily as she decides to do the wrong ones. Inherently good, outwardly bad- it doesn’t matter. With fantastic critiques on religion and technology, I don’t mind being edged slowly towards an eventual onslaught of magic and discovery. No matter how slowly we are introduced to the underlying secrets of Dreamland, I am comfortable enough to accept these characters at their face value.
The backstories are tasteful yet warm; the relationships stem from absurdity and become the norm. People from two seasons ago are brought into the mix to cultivate confusion. But most of all, spending my days with the three besties is all I need after a long day of hard work.
